The Measurement of Blood Fow of Anterior Cerebral Artery in Normal Newborns Using Duplex Doppler Ultrasonography

Abstract
Duplex Doppler ultrasonography, a combination of B-mode real time sonography and pulsed Doppler sonography, has it possible to quantitatively measure the velocity and flow waveforms of the anterior cerebral artery.
The authors measured the blood flow velocity of the anterior cerebral artery of 100 healthy newborns with duplex Doppler ultrasonography (5.0 MHz, mechanical sector probe, Ultramark 9, ATL, USA) and analyzed the wave form and calculated S/D
(systolic/diastolic) ratio, pulsatility index, resistive index.
The wave form of the anterior cerebral artery in all 100 newborns showed uniformly biphasic form which has low vascular resistance or low impedance of vascular bed. The mean S/D ratio was 3.18¡¾0.45, mean of pulsatility index was 1.30¡¾0.12, and
the
mean of resistive index was 0.69¡¾0.05. There was no significant difference in the resistive index and pulsatility index between sexes and among age groups(0-7)(p>0.05).
In conclusion, duplex Doppler ultrasonography may play an important role in the evaluation of cerebral blood flow without invasiveness, so the wave forms and calculated indices of the anterior cerebral artery can help to evaluate the cerebral
flow
abnormality in infants.
